Sidi Bou Saïd is about 15 kilometers north of Tunis,
the capitol. My earliest memories start here. When we
arrived we had a 1946 Pontiac which was admired by a local
prince named Affif. He wanted the car for his son, so he
offered to buy it from my father for the same price my
father paid for it. He also threw in the use of his 14 room
beach house while we sere in Sidi Bou Saïd. So we lived
in the prince's beach house, on the Mediterranean Sea from
1947 to 1948. At the time, I spoke French as well as I did
English. When my parents would go out, they would leave me
at the prince's palace and I was kept with the other kids in
the hareem or harem. So I am one of the few men I know
(actually the only one I know) who has spent nights in a
harem. So young, so much to do...sigh.

This is La Place Principale in Sidi Bou Saïd. It is like a town center and the city offices. |

The aforementioned beach house below the castle (you had to drive through the palace courtyard to get to the beach house. Someday I hope to return to this place, just to see how the years have treated it. |
